Bromsgrove Contemporary Music Concerts

Bromsgrove Concerts has a well-established reputation for programming and promoting contemporary music. Each season of concerts includes about four concerts devoted to contemporary works and other concerts in the season also include some contemporary pieces.

Contemporary music concerts at Bromsgrove ran under the series title of Mixing Music for 14 seasons from 1991-1992 until 2004-2005. As part of the move to Artrix in 2005, our contemporary concerts have been integrated with the main chamber music series.

Repertoire for the contemporary concerts is drawn from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Whilst the concerts tends to concentrate on British composers, music by other composers is also programmed.

Since 1998 each season has featured at least one new work commissioned by Bromsgrove Concerts.

In the 2005-2006 season we commissioned a new work by Phillip Neil Martin, which was given its first performance by the Schubert Ensemble on 15 March 2006.

In the 2006-2007 season we commissioned a new work by Ed Bennett, which was given its first performance by the Fidelio Piano Trio on 13 April 2007.

In the 2007-2008 season we were planning to commission a new work by Morgan Hayes, which would have been given its first performance by Stephen Gutman on 14 March 2008. However, due to the withdrawal of any financial support from the Arts Council, we regrettably had to cancel this plan.

The 'Four Minute Starter' scheme aims to give young composers the chance to have a short work performed in one of our concerts. This scheme enabled us to programme student works for many seasons but it is not currently being operated.
