Mixing Music's13th Season features composer Liz Johnson
The featured composer for this season is Liz Johnson, a Birmingham-based
composer, who will introduce each concert and encourage discussion between
the musicians, visiting composers and audience members. Liz's own music is prominently
featured in the season, and Mixing Music is commissioning two new works
from her, which will be given their premières by Noszferatu on 19 November
and by the Fitzwilliam Quartet on 10 December. Both commissions are funded by
the Regional Arts Lottery Programme.
All concerts are on Wednesdays. The concert on 31 March 2004 will be in
Spadesbourne Hall; all other concerts will be in the
Guesten Hall.

The Fitzwilliam Quartet were delighted to be asked to give the first performance of Liz Johnson’s new quartet. However, they were so taken with her first quartet, when they played it in Birmingham last year, that they also wanted to perform that — hence the programme for their concert in Bromsgrove, which includes both. |

As part of IXION’s ongoing development into new areas of musical thought, artistic director and composer Andrew Toovey has collected together a group of composers to write the first in a projected series of 'IXION' concertos, this one for duo violin and viola together with the IXION Ensemble. The composers taking part with either a movement or a cadenza are: Michael Finnissy, Geoffrey Hannan, Andrew Hamilton, Morgan Hayes, Stephen Montague, Luke Stoneham and Andrew Toovey. To complement this first concerto performance, a selection from these composers’ works and works by Crane, Feldman, Harrison, Johnson and Rizzuto will also be performed. | |
Formed in 1987, IXION have established themselves as one of the leading contemporary ensembles in the country. They appear regularly at the Brighton Festival and on BBC Radio 3, and have released several critically acclaimed CDs featuring the music of artistic director Andrew Toovey and Michael Finnissy. ‘Burningly committed, rawly emotional, expressively unconstrained, intellectually underpinned’ Financial Times |

The Ionian Singers’ repertoire extends from the 16th century to the present; but contemporary music forms a large part of their programmes, and they have received many awards for their activities in this field. Choral music has also been noticeable by its absence from Mixing Music — until this concert. Please note: this concert will not be held in the Guesten Hall; it will be in Spadesbourne Hall. |
